What we believe in

At Octant, we're all about giving friendly and caring financial advice to everyone. We believe that financial advice shouldn't be limited to a select few, but should be accessible and inclusive for all. We genuinely care about each person's unique goals and challenges, and we're here to help you make informed decisions in a friendly and supportive manner.

Private-client care for every Kiwi. We want our clients to do well, and we approach our advice in this way. Giving every client the kind of attentive, personal service usually reserved for the wealthy is what Octant was founded to do.

Accessible advice for all. We charge no upfront fees for our advice, as we generate our revenue through the product providers we recommend if and when our advice is taken. Good advice comes with no obligations.

Important Information About Our Business

Octant Financial Group Limited (FSP1013283) is a Financial Advice Provider that holds a licence issued by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) to provide financial advice services. You can find us listed on the Financial Service Providers Register at fsp-register.companiesoffice.govt.nz.

Octant Financial Group is a financial services firm in New Zealand specialising in Personal Insurance and generalised KiwiSaver advice. Our mission is to empower Kiwis to secure their financial future by providing the best advice possible.

Quality of advice is our passion and what we do helps our clients protect what they've built and grow confidence in their future. We are here to help you with all your Personal Insurance and KiwiSaver needs.

Our Nature and Scope of Financial Advice Services

The conditions of our licence allow us to provide the following financial advice services: Personal Risk & Medical Insurance, and KiwiSaver.

Personal Risk & Medical Insurance

Octant Financial Group provides personalised advice that takes into account your individual circumstances to determine the personal risk products that best meet your personal goals and needs. We follow a documented advice process that uses your personal situation to work out what's important to you, what products you need and how much cover you should have in place. We then recommend the provider that offers the cover most suited to your stated preferences.

Covers we can help with.

Providers we work with. Octant Financial Group has chosen to work with the following personal risk insurers:

This means that Octant Financial Group will only consider the providers listed above when recommending a product to meet your personal risk insurance needs.

KiwiSaver

At Octant Financial Group, we provide scoped advice on KiwiSaver, limited to the providers we have chosen to work with.

Scoped KiwiSaver advice is where we can help you work out what your risk profile is when it comes to investing and recommend a KiwiSaver fund and provider that matches your investment timeframe, risk tolerance and provider preferences. We can also help you understand your contributions and its impact on the overall outcome.

We do not offer investment planning or retirement planning services. If you would like a further personalised advice service on KiwiSaver, Octant can refer you to an investment specialist that can help.

Furthermore, we are able to refer you to other service providers, including Generate for Managed Funds. If you decide to invest with Generate, Octant will receive a commission for referring you. The commission is an ongoing payment of 0.125% of your account balance. This fee is paid to us by Generate from the revenue they receive from the fees you pay.

We have chosen to work with the following KiwiSaver providers when helping our clients:

This means that Octant Financial Group will only consider the providers listed above when recommending a product to meet your KiwiSaver needs.

Our Fees to you for providing you with advice

Octant Financial Group does not charge any upfront fees for our risk and KiwiSaver advice services. To ensure advice remains accessible for all our clients, we are paid a commission by the provider of any product you put in place on the back of our recommendation.

There is no charge for meeting with us, for the research and analysis behind a recommendation, for putting a policy in place, for reviewing your cover, or for our help at claim time. You will never receive an invoice from us for taking our advice, and you will never receive an invoice for deciding not to.

There is one exception, which applies to insurance policies only. It is set out in full below. It does not apply to our KiwiSaver advice, and we will never charge you a fee in connection with KiwiSaver.

Early cancellation fee

When you take out an insurance policy on our recommendation, the insurer pays us an upfront commission. That commission covers the work already completed before the policy started: the meetings, the needs analysis, the comparison across providers, the application and underwriting, and putting the cover in place.

If a policy is cancelled, or cover is materially reduced, within 24 months of the policy start date, the insurer reclaims some or all of that commission from us. This is known as a clawback. The work we did for you has still been done, but we are no longer paid for it.

In that situation we may charge you a fee. The details are:

We set this fee out in writing in the Nature and Scope of Advice document and the Important Information document we give you before we begin work on your recommendation, and you confirm your agreement to it in writing when you accept our advice. We will never charge a fee that was not disclosed to you beforehand.

When we will not charge this fee

We will not charge an early cancellation fee where cover ends or is reduced because of any of the following:

If you are unsure whether a fee would apply to a change you are thinking about, please talk to us first. We would far rather have that conversation than send you an invoice.

Commissions and Conflicts of Interest

Octant Financial Group is paid a commission by the product providers when you take up one of their products on the back of our recommendation. The commission that applies to your recommendation is always confirmed with you when we provide our advice.

For our insurance product providers, the upfront commission paid to the company will range from 0% up to 230% of your first year's premium, depending on which insurance company you take out cover with. The company will also receive a servicing commission of 7.5% up to 25% of your annual premium for the life of the policy.

For KiwiSaver, Generate pays the company an upfront commission of up to $300 and an ongoing commission of 0.25% per year calculated on your account balance. Booster pays no upfront commission, and an ongoing commission of 0.50% of your account balance per year and a marketing fee of up to $100. These commissions are paid by the provider from the revenue they receive from the fees you pay, and are not an additional cost to you.

We do not manufacture our own insurance policies or KiwiSaver funds. Some product providers may subsidise training, technology solutions and compliance costs for Octant Financial Group Limited, and from time to time providers may offer social events or gifts as a thank you for business placed.

Although we are paid by the providers, we always put your interests first. We do this by:

We record all conflicts of interest, gifts and incentives in registers that are reviewed regularly, and Octant Financial Group completes internal and external reviews of our advice process, including an annual independent Compliance Assurance Review, to ensure we follow a thorough process that puts client interests first.
